Hahaha! The only people I have ever heard use the word "Joisey" are from out of state. I love being a Jersey Girl and all that it entails. I have a big mouth, am unforgivingly sarcastic and i still sometimes wait in my car for someone to come pump my gas. Even though I am full of pride for the Dirty Jerz, I am somewhat of a hybrid. Growing up, my friends used to tease me about my "midwestern accent" (especially when i say "fire," or "hire"...) I guess I learned how to speak from my Buckeye Mama. I do not however use the words, "pop" or "kleenex"...it's "soda" and "tissues." I guess I'm just a regional mutt...
The only Cleveland transplant I know from Jersey has a)no accent and b)no attitude. Also the only time I've been to Jersey, I was in the middle of the country. And of course there are these things called Jersey cows.
ReplyDeleteSo my conclusion here is that New Jersey has deliberately cultivated their tough dirty image for the sake of not being seen as the country cousin of NYC.
hahah! jersey is very diverse. we do have a ton of gorgeous gentleman's farms (we are also famous for our blueberries, tomatoes and we are the largest exporter of eggplant...don't ask me how the hell i know that). there is a north jersey/south jersey stigma. i definitely stereotype people from south jersey as a bit podunk. i think the whole "dirty image" of jersey is not in regards to attitude, but in actual cleanliness, for if you have ever driven the turnpike with it's lovely smoke stacks and landfills or visited our hypodermic needle spotted beaches you would know exactly why it lives up to it's name.
